    Facts about Southampton

    General Info

Southampton (/saʊθˈ(h)æmptən/ (About this soundlisten)) is a city in Hampshire, South East England, approximately 70 miles (110 km) south-west of London and 15 miles (24 km) west of Portsmouth.[6][7] A major port,[8] and close to the New Forest, it lies at the northernmost point of Southampton Water, at the confluence of the River Test and Itchen,[9] with the River Hamble joining to the south. The unitary authority area of Southampton had a population of 253,651 at the 2011 census.[2] Southampton forms part of the South Hampshire conurbation.

    History

Archaeological finds suggest that the area has been inhabited since the Stone Age.[14] Following the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43 and the conquering of the local Britons in AD 70 the fortress settlement of Clausentum was established. It was an important trading port and defensive outpost of Winchester, at the site of modern Bitterne Manor. Clausentum was defended by a wall and two ditches and is thought to have contained a bath house.[15] Clausentum was not abandoned until around 410.
